Alpha Lambda Xi raises funds for Ground Angels (June, 2004)

Joanye Younts of Humble received four tickets to the May 11th Astros game courtesy of Alpha Lambda Xi, the Kingwood College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for the Two Year College. By donating the club level seats and a parking pass, Manchester Sling Co. of Houston enabled the chapter to conduct a raffle raising a total of $1,000 for Ground Angels South Central. The check was presented June 2nd to the organization’s founder, Kathy Broussard.

An angel can be defined as "a kind and lovable person" who "manifests goodness, purity, and selflessness," and this is the perfect description of Kathy Broussard, founder of Ground Angels South Central. While volunteering as a pilot for Angel Flight South Central, which provides free air transportation for patients needing the services of distant medical facilities, Kathy recognized a great need for complimentary ground transportation. Working with Ryla Bouchier and Ronda McGowan, Kathy created Ground Angels South Central by establishing a network of volunteer drivers to shuttle passengers between the airport and Houston’s Medical Center. She now serves as a coordinator between the two entities continuing to volunteer both as a pilot for Angel Flight and as a driver for Ground Angels, all while working a full time job. When asked how she manages it all she replied, “I get my strength from our passengers. These individuals are fighting a battle that is bigger than anything most of us will ever have to face. When you consider that they are battling for their lives, it really puts our everyday struggles into perspective. It is such a little thing that we do to help, yet it can make a monumental difference.” Kathy credits the success of the organization to the many individuals who willingly give of their time and their hearts. “Without the help of our many volunteers,” she says, “it just wouldn’t work. It takes everyone pulling together.”

The addition of travel expenses to already sky-high medical bills can create an overwhelming financial burden for many patients. Angel Flight South Central and Ground Angels South Central are working hard to alleviate some of that burden. Believing that the mission of Ground Angels South Central is an important one, the members of Alpha Lambda Xi have not only acted on its behalf by raising funds, but many of the students have also signed up as volunteers. As one of its service projects for Ground Angels, the chapter has created a web site, www.groundangelssc.org, where individuals can learn more about Ground Angels and/or register as volunteers. You can also contact the group’s founder directly by calling Kathy Broussard directly at 281.839.1411. The need for volunteer drivers is greatest in the NE and NW areas of Houston. Kathy estimates that 1,800 patients will use their services this year. If you have a valid driver’s license and are willing to invest a couple of hours a month of your time, Ground Angels South Central could really use your help to show these individuals that they do not have to fight this battle alone.
